The OPRT adopted Resolution to address labor issues on board tuna longline fishing vessels

2022/6/24

The OPRT adopted at its Ordinary General Meeting held on June 21, 2022 the Resolution to address labor issues on board tuna longline fishing vessels. In recent years, labor issues onboard fishing vessels have been attracting an increasing attention and the distant-water tuna long line fishery is regarded as one of the fisheries susceptible to labor issues. If this problem is not addressed properly, it may lead to boycotting of long line products. The OPRT, as the organization for promoting responsible tuna fisheries, considered that it should take actions and adopted this resolution. The OPRT will use this resolution to appeal to the world as a commitment of the OPRT Members to tackle this issue and has already sent it to the WCPFC, IOTC, IATTC and ICCAT.
