2013/ 8/14

OPRT held its annual members meeting in Tokyo on June 27 and discussed the critical situation of bigeye tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. After the meeting, on July 22, OPRT sent a letter to Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), requesting the establishment of an effective multi-year management program for recovering the declining stock. In the letter, OPRT emphasized a need of capping the number of large scale purse seiners as well as measures to control newly increasing small scale longline fishing vessels . WCPFC will have a working group meeting to establish a draft of the multi-year management program in Tokyo from Aug. 27 to 30th.
